Welcome to the Databases and Information Systems (DBIS) Group at the University of Basel

The main focus of the DBIS group is the development of novel database concepts and their application to large-scale distributed information systems, in particular to Data Management in the Cloud, Multimedia Information Retrieval, and Service-oriented Architectures & Process-based Systems (Workflows). From a technical perspective, this includes aspects of distribution, reliability, scalability, mobility, heterogeneity, dynamic adaptability, and semantics. The results of this work are applied to various fields like Crowdsourcing applications, e-Health or e-Science.

Congratulations to Florian Spiess for successfully defending his PhD thesis “Multimedia Analytics in Virtual Spaces” in which he explored how virtual reality (VR) can enhance multimedia analytics by developing and evaluating a VR-based system for querying and browsing large multimedia collections, particularly in the context of cultural heritage, demonstrating that VR can offer performance comparable to traditional interfaces while providing benefits in user experience and engagement.
