IIIF and vitrivr (Bachelor Thesis, Finished)
Author
Description
The International Image Interoperability Framework is an emerging way in the Humanities to share visual documents across institutions and collections. While IIIF specifies a powerful API for the access to images and their accompanying metadata, it lacks any means for content-based retrieval. The aim of this project is to extend the multimedia retrieval stack vitrivr such that it becomes able to close this gap by augmenting it by means to access multimedia documents stored in IIIF servers directly via IIIF and make them searchable.
The result of the project should be an extension to vitrivr on the basis of which the following questions can be answered:
- Is the current IIIF standard sufficient to the continuous ingestion, processing and indexing of multimedia collections in order to make them searchable?
- What needs to be added to vitrivr to leverage the full capabilities of IIIF?
- What would be needed additions to IIIF to leverage the full capabilities of vitrivr?
